Black Bear

The Louisiana Black Bear is one of 16 recognized subspecies of the American black bear "Ursus Americanus". This bear has a skull that is long, narrow and flat; however, he has very large molars or back teeth. Black bears are huge, bulky animals with long black hair and can weigh more than 600 pounds. The Louisiana black bear often winters in hollow cypress trees either in or along sloughs, lakes or riverbanks in bottom land habitats of the Tensas and Atchafalaya river basins.
