CIVICS AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION

Our civics education resources provide teachers with the tools to instill in Louisiana youth an understanding and appreciation of American democracy and equip them with the desire and skills for active civic involvement. All lessons and activities are based on the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum and Grade Level Expectations and incorporate basic literacy strategies. 


GEAUXVOTE SMART! K-12 Civics Curriculum

Our standards-based lessons and resources provide basic citizenship information for K-12 students as well as citizens who are interested in a civics refresher course.

  • Division of Power  Investigate how the U.S. Constitution organizes our government to create a balance of power and to protect our rights. Grades one through 12
  • Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens Learn about the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens and your most important duty as an American citizen. Grades one through 12
  • Media and Propaganda Find out why the media (newspapers, television, etc.) is important to American democracy and how you can use the media to GeauxVote Smart. Grades one through 12
  • Political Parties Learn why political parties are important to our country. Grades one through 12
  • Electing a President Explore the role of political parties, presidential candidates, campaign contributors and voters in selecting the President of the United States. Grades one through 12
  • Vote! Students in kindergarten through third grade learn about voting and hold a class election to choose their favorite U.S. symbol.
  • How We Vote: The Machinery of Democracy  Explore how and when different groups in the United States gained the right to vote and how Americans cast their ballot through history. Grades four though 12
  • Hit the Campaign Trail Investigate the office of President of the United States and hit the campaign trail to elect a new Commander in Chief. Grades 4 through 12

CAMPAIGNS AND ELECTIONS INTERACTIVE ADVENTURE

Embark on an adventure into the exciting world of politics to explore one of the most important features of our American democracy—elections and voting.Here students register to vote, investigate political parties, campaign for governor, build a platform, prepare a state budget, and vote in a simulated election.

ELECTION JOURNAL: ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE

Students use this journal to record interesting facts about the issues, candidates and events of the 2008 campaign season. Pack your journal with information and get ready to follow the election trail!

The user-friendly home page guides students through the election process beginning with the search for basic information about political parties, campaign issues and presidential candidates. As the general election nears, students examine the election debates, storing their information and thoughts in their election journal. The Road to the White House is also a powerful analysis tool with which students may compare and contrast the issues and candidates as well as enter and examine election results. Note: Requires Microsoft Access XP or later.
