ABOUT UCC

History

In January, 1990 Louisiana adopted the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). This statewide notification system replaced Louisiana's chattel mortgage laws and for the first time, provides lenders with statewide information regarding liens on movable, personal property.

As the last state to adopt the UCC, Louisiana was fortunate to implement a statewide database that benefited its users by allowing the filing of financing statements with any of the 64 parish filing offices.

Revised Article 9

Today, in an attempt to make the Uniform Commercial Code Program more uniform among all filing jurisdictions both nationally and internationally, the drafting committee from NACCUSL began work on revising the Uniform Commercial Code.

Effective July 1, 2001, Louisiana joins the rest of the nation in implementing Revised Article 9. Although the national draft was not adopted in its entirety in Louisiana, Act 128 of the 2001 Regular Legislative Session does amend Article 9 to reflect most of the changes being adopted nationally.
