Betty Lou Cain Donation July 28, 2004
Ms. Betty Lou Cain made a donation to State Archivist Florent Hardy, Jr. Her collection includes historical and genealogical information from East Feliciana Parish. Also included are historical catalogs from the former Silliman College, a Presbyterian College in Clinton, established in 1852. Louisiana Historic Marker Collection - Dotsie Langlinais LeBlanc February 18, 2004
The Louisiana Historic Marker Collection contains photographs and indexes of historic markers located throughout Louisiana by parish and was compiled by Ms. Dotsie Langlinais LeBlanc after researching these markers statewide between 1989 and 1996. The Collection contains information about 476 markers identified by parish and manufactured at Sewah Studios in Marietta, Ohio, as a result of research of legislation enacted in 1942, 1948, and 1968.
The markers can be categorized by people: early explorers, civic leaders, clergy, Civil War leaders, Indian tribes and their locations, individuals and their inventions and contributions, judicial and political leaders and references; places: significant sites and developments; and things: colonial development, concessions, land grants, educational institutions, battles and skirmishes, Confederate cemeteries, a tomb of an unknown soldier, churches and other religious designations, cities and towns and settlements, historic buildings, one old iron bridge on the National Register of Historic Places, hospitals, plantation homes, waterways, ferries, railroads and depots, roads and trails, airports, cultures, salt works, architectural styles, cemeteries, museums, military installations, mighty oaks, literary references, industries and boundaries.
This Collection is a complement to the Historic Marker Program currently housed at State Archives and provided by the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism's Division of Historic Preservation in 1995 which contains documented information spanning the years of 1950-1991 and includes correspondence and purchase orders.
Fort Butler Foundation Donates Brick from Old State Capitol at Donaldsonville January 24, 2002
Members of the Fort Butler Foundation attending a donation ceremony at the Louisiana State Archives on Thursday, January 24, 2002 were Andrew Capone, President of the Fort Butler Foundation, Mary Elle Bradford and her husband August Bradford, who is Vice President of the foundation.
Items donated were a brick from the actual foundation of the Donaldsonville Capitol building along with an original photograph of the partially destroyed building (1860's) and a sketch of the building (1930's) as reconstructed based on discovered documents of the period. The picture was used in providing a model for the Donaldsonville Capitol used on one of the new Capitol building's elevator doors.
Baton Rouge Wal-Mart Awards A Matching Grant April 2001
Secretary of State Fox McKeithen proudly accepted the Wal-Mart Matching Grant award recently awarded to the State Archives by Craig Herpin, Manager, Wal-Mart Super Center on North Mall Drive in Baton Rouge.
"Sarge" Sanders Donates Photographs of Capitol January 24, 2000
Mr. Jim "Sarge" Sanders, a Baton Rouge photographer, donated several of his original photographs depicting the Capitol. The photographs will be displayed in a convenient location for all to see when visiting the Archives.
Lawrence Shiver Donates 1801 Cabildo Documents June 19, 2000
Lawrence W. Shiver of Walker, Louisiana, donated unique 1801 documents to the Archives. The documents take the form of invoices and receipts for work performed on several fireplaces in the Cabildo in 1801. Master bricklayers Francisco Bernucho and Antonio Dubois were paid at the rate of two dollars per day for the work completed.
Sylvia Kelly Smith of Franklinton Donates Family Heirloom Dress June 10, 2000
Caroline E. Noblet was born ca 1845 to John Noblet and his wife, Margaret West. John was known to be a fairly wealthy land owner during that time in the Livingston Parish, Louisiana, area around Denham Springs. Caroline was their second child and their only daughter. Caroline's dress was probably made sometime between 1875-1882. The garment is a wonderful example of hand workmanship during Caroline's lifetime. It is completely handmade, including all the many seams.
Attending the Act of Donation were Caroline's great-grand daughter Sylvia Kelly Smith of Franklinton, Louisiana, and Undersecretary of State Jane Jones.
Conservation Laboratory to Restore St. John the Baptist Documents June 1, 2000
Harold L. Montegut, Jr., the Clerk of Court for St. John the Baptist Parish met with State Archivist, Florent Hardy, Jr. on the occasion of transferring Records of Conveyances dating back to 1753. Twelve cubic boxes of documents have been donated to the Archives' Colonial Louisiana Collection. The records, along with an 1908 map of the parish, will be restored in the Archives Conservation Laboratory, one of several modern facilities in the the nation for preserving and restoring fragile documents. Our lab features the latest in conservation equipment and technical expertise to sustain the life of valuable instruments.
Chinese Artist Wan Ding Donates Painting April 20, 2000
Popular Chinese artist Wan Ding met with Louisiana State Archives Administrator Dr. Florent Hardy, Jr. on the occasion of Wan Ding's donation of his "Memory of Louisiana" painting to the Archives permanent collection. Wan Ding first visited Louisiana in 1996 and later taught Chinese painting at LSU. He has exhibited paintings at LSU, and twice at the Archives. The "Louisiana Swamp" exhibit will return for a second engagement in August. |
